Removable steel roof provides access from above
Hard Top containers
Load from above using a crane and close with a fixed roof
A Hard Top container combines the ability to load from the top with a fixed steel roof after loading. It is used for tall or heavy cargo that cannot fit through the container’s end doors.
The roof is lifted off using appropriate equipment and must be stored securely during loading. Once the cargo is in place and secured, the roof is reattached if the height of the load permits.
CHS Container carries 20-foot Hard Top containers in Premium and Cargo Worthy grades.

A fixed roof that can be moved
Access from above without a tarp as a permanent solution
A hard top is a good choice when you need to load the vehicle with a crane and want a solid roof over the load afterward.
The roof requires its own space
Plan the lift before the container arrives
In addition to the standard space requirements for the crane and clearance, there must also be a safe spot on the ground for the roof during loading and unloading. This applies at both the beginning and the end of the transport.

Frequently Asked Questions
What is a hard-top container?
A Hard Top is a container with a fixed but removable steel roof. When the roof is removed, tall or heavy cargo can be loaded from above using a crane.
What is the difference between a Hard Top and an Open Top?
The Hard Top is covered with a removable steel roof. The Open Top is usually covered with a tarp and roof arches. The Hard Top typically requires more equipment to handle the roof itself.
Can a hard-top container be used for oversized cargo?
It may be possible to transport the load without a roof in place or under special conditions, but this requires specific approval. The load’s dimensions, weight, securing, and route must be assessed before placing an order.

How the Design Works
A Hard Top container has fixed sides, a floor, and end walls, as well as a removable steel roof. The roof can be lifted off so that cargo can be lowered into the container with a crane. This makes the container suitable for machinery and components that are too tall or unwieldy to fit through the end doors.
Once the cargo is in place and secured, the roof can be reattached if there is sufficient headroom. The cargo and roof must be handled according to the specific model’s instructions.
Hard Top or Open Top?
A Hard Top provides a solid steel roof after loading. An Open Top is usually quicker to open and is covered with a tarp. The choice therefore depends both on the desired level of protection and on the lifting equipment available at the point of departure and destination.
Premium or Cargo Worthy?
Premium is chosen when a better-maintained condition is important. Cargo Worthy is more function-oriented and may show more visible cosmetic wear. Model images do not necessarily show the specific container’s markings.
Transportation details must be clarified
A hard top is optional equipment, and availability may vary. Please provide the cargo’s length, width, height, weight, and lifting points, as well as the point of origin and destination. If the container is to be shipped by sea, the CSC status and the carrier’s acceptance must be verified for the specific unit.
