Insulated containers

Store goods and equipment under more stable conditions

An insulated container mitigates rapid temperature changes and provides better protection against condensation than a standard shipping container. It may therefore be suitable for storing inventory, tools, materials, furnishings, and technical equipment that should be kept under more stable conditions.

At CHS Container, you can buy or rent insulated containers in 8-, 10-, 20-, and 40-foot sizes. The selection includes new, Premium, and Cargo Worthy containers. An insulated container does not regulate the temperature on its own, but can be equipped with features such as electricity, lighting, ventilation, and heating.

Please tell us what the container will be used for, where it will be located, and how long you’ll need it. Then we can determine whether passive insulation is sufficient or if you need a reefer container with active temperature control.

Keeps the heat in and the cold out

Insulation minimizes temperature fluctuations

Insulation delays the effects of cold and heat, but does not automatically maintain a constant temperature. If the contents require a specific temperature range, heating, ventilation, cooling, or a reefer may be necessary.

Your contents determine the need for ventilation

Control moisture with the right solution

Insulation can reduce the risk of condensation, but damp cargo and a lack of air circulation can still cause problems. The type of use, location, and frequency of door openings determine whether ventilation or dehumidification should also be used.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is an insulated container?

An insulated container has insulating layers in the walls and ceiling, and typically in the floor as well. The insulation mitigates rapid temperature changes from the outside, but does not itself produce heat or cold.

An insulated container has passive insulation. A reefer has an active system that can regulate the temperature within the specific model’s operating range. Choose a reefer if you need to maintain a specific temperature range.

CHS Container delivers insulated containers to all islands connected by bridges in Denmark. The price depends, among other things, on the size, condition, delivery address, and access conditions. It usually takes us 4–6 business days to insulate the container and 2–4 business days to deliver it.

Insulated containers for storage and transport

When is an insulated container a good choice?

A standard shipping container is quickly affected by the outside temperature. This can cause significant temperature fluctuations and increase the risk of condensation. An insulated shipping container does not change the weather around it, but the insulation slows down the rate at which the container is affected. This provides more stable conditions for items such as tools, building materials, furniture, spare parts, electronics, and production equipment.

Insulation is not a guarantee against frost, heat, or moisture. The container’s location, the season, the moisture level of the contents, and the number of times the door is opened also play a role. Therefore, the intended use of the container should be clarified before selecting the size and equipment.

Passive or active temperature control?

An insulated container is a passive solution. It does not have a system that measures and regulates the temperature. If the shipment requires a fixed minimum or maximum temperature, you may need electric heating, ventilation, dehumidification, or active cooling. For temperature-sensitive goods, temperature requirements and any regulatory requirements should be defined before selecting a container. A reefer container may be more suitable for this type of job.

Select size and quality category

Insulated 8- and 10-foot containers are suitable for smaller quantities and locations with limited space.

A 20-foot model meets many common storage needs, while a 40-foot model offers significantly more floor space and volume. The insulation takes up space, so the interior dimensions are smaller than those of a standard shipping container with the same exterior length. Therefore, be sure to check the dimensions, door opening, and the necessary access space around the container.

New containers show few signs of wear. “Premium” is a select used quality with a neater appearance, while “Cargo Worthy” may have visible signs of wear and is chosen when functionality matters more than appearance. Read a detailed explanation of the quality categories here.
